Waiting in Hope: Rising Cinnamon Rolls and the Glory to Come
Inspired by Romans 8:18-25
"I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us... But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently." (Romans 8:18, 25 NIV)
This morning, I began the careful work of making cinnamon rolls for my family. The process is long: mixing the dough, kneading it until smooth, and then allowing it to rise. The yeast works silently, hidden from view, while the dough slowly transforms. I must resist the urge to rush; the rising time is essential to the light, fluffy rolls we love.
As I watch the dough expand, I reflect on Paul’s words in Romans 8. Life, much like these cinnamon rolls, involves waiting. There are seasons where nothing is happening. We feel stuck, our prayers unanswered, our sufferings heavy. Yet, the Spirit gently reminds us: the glory ahead far outweighs the present moment. God is working, even when I cannot see it.
The rising dough is a quiet testimony of God’s process in me. The Spirit is always active lifting, stretching, preparing me for what lies ahead. My hope is not in immediate results, but in the promise of His glory revealed in me. As I wait, I learn trust, patience, and surrender.
Finally, when the dough has risen, I roll it out, spread the butter, sprinkle cinnamon and sugar, and carefully shape each roll. Into the oven they go, filling the house with the sweet aroma of what is to come- a small foretaste of God’s promised glory.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for the unseen work of Your Spirit. Teach me to wait with hope, to trust in Your timing, and to believe that the glory You are preparing far outweighs my present trials. Like rising dough, let my life expand under Your loving hand, so I may one day reflect Your fullness and goodness. Amen.
Reflection Poem:
In waiting still, your work is done,
Though unseen now, a new life will come.
The rising dough, the patient heart,
Both shaped by You — the Master’s art.
