Baking in the Father's Kitchen
Inspired by Romans 8:14-17
"For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God… Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ..." (Romans 8:14, 17, NIV)
This morning, as I fasten my apron and take my ingredients, I stop to think of who I really am: a loved child of God. Romans 8 encourages me not to rely on my ability, my company, or even the outcome of today baking. Rather, I am guided by the Spirit, adopted into the family of the Father, and become an heir of his promises. His kingdom is so large and my kitchen is just a small part of it.
What does the Heavenly Father desire of me as I bake? He calls me to allow the Spirit to guide even the simplest tasks. My measuring, kneading, and baking become acts of stewardship and worship when I surrender them to Him. Just as ingredients must be blended, proofed, and refined by heat to produce a loaf, so my life is shaped by His loving hand. The flour of my abilities, the yeast of my faith, and the oil of His Spirit rise together in His timing.
He is encouraging me to be thankful in every recipe I make as provision is a result of His abundance. He asks me to share the product of my work, fresh bread, warm pastries, simple loaves with others in the image of His generosity and compassion. Then my kitchen can be the place where I can feel His love, where His welcome can be tasted in hospitality, and where, with His Spirit directing my hands, body and soul can be served.
Most of all, He desires that I rest in my identity. Whether the bread rises perfectly or falls flat, I remain His cherished child, secure in His grace. The outcome of my baking does not determine my worth; His adoption does.
Prayer:
Father, I bless You that You called me Thy child and invited me to serve Thee even in the silent labours of my kitchen. Stand me alongside the guidance of Your Spirit in all my work, that I may bake with love and that I may give my work as an offering to You. And may my kitchen be a place where thou hast peace, and love be spread abroad. Amen!
Reflection Poem:
Flour and yeast, Your Spirit blends,
Hands that serve and hearts You tend.
Child of God, in work and rest,
Baking daily at Your behest.
